So last we checked our co-captains Drury and Briere left, Vanek almost left but got huge money to stay and Sabre Nation is feeling like shit. Management surely played their cards wrong this off-season and it cost them Drury (who they wanted to keep), but this team is still loaded with talent and will be a playoff contender next year. Stanley Cup contender, I'm not so sure.

Don't have much else to say right now. I've been thinking I will get FTIT back up and going and share my views of the Bills, Sabres, movies, TV, celebrity wardrobe mishaps, and try let you know what live music shows you should be going to see. Or maybe I won't who knows.

I've been in the the Seattle/Tacoma airport for approxiamtely ten hours now. I have had two bloody mary's and six 20 ounce Bass Ales in that time. If this post doesn't make much such that is the main reason why. Anyway, I have spent the entire day drinking and watching college baseketball.

I am redy for th NHL postseason to begin. I think the Sabres feel the same way. They have been playing the entire season on top and this recent losing streak I think is more boredom on their part than anything. They won last night in Florida, a traditionally tough spot for them and are as of this writing are up 3-1 in Tampa, there is nothing to worry about, they are gonna roll in the playoffs, baby.

Weekend Recap

I attended a great hockey game Friday night followed by a great rock show. The Sabres lit up the Canadiens for eight (8) goals and I lit myself up with approximately thirty-two (32) beers through out the night. Hoofah. I also feel personally responsible for getting Stand back out for a second encore during their Union Bar gig. Keep on rockin in a free world.

The Bills certainly made some interesting moves over the weekend. The Dockery signing was an excellent surprise, JP's left side looks strong to very strong. Good riddance Nate Celebrate, we will miss you London Fletcher Baker and please trade McGahee and draft this guy in the second or third round.

Well, I am sure everyone who reads FTIT saw the hit on Drury and the brawl that ensued last night. Definitely a late-cheap-blind-sided hit by Neil on Buffalo's best player. Does Neil get suspended? Tough to say what the NHL will do. We'll know probably by this afternoon. Peters going after Emery was classic, but will cost him a few games. Lost in all this is the Sabres beat the Sens with half their lineup out. Nice goal by Stafford to win in the shootout.

Movie Review and Obnoxious Sabres Fans

The wife to be and I saw Children of Men last night. The movies premise of a future where women can no longer get pregnant and the entire world self destructing obviously doesn't make for an uplifting-feel-good movie, however it was a great great movie that kept me entertained from start to finish. I didn't even get up to piss even though I had drank a whole medium Sprite before the movie and my bladder was ready to burst. I would highly recommend this movie, especially for anyone who likes a visually entertaining movie, outstanding cinematography, and lots of loud gunfire and bomb explosions.

There are some interesting blog posts out from the last fews days regarding how obnoxious Sabres fans are. Apparently Sabres fan was out in full force this weekend in Columbus reeking havoc. Here are another couple of accounts from Off Wing Opinion. I was at the Washington game in early December and it was not bad at all. The fans were definitely vocal and loud before, during, but not so much after the game since they got killed, but I didn't witness anything that would be considered bad behavior. That said, I definitely believe that there were some very very drunk Sabres fans being obnoxious, anyone who has ever been to a Bills game knows that there are MANY Buffalo Sports fans that hail from the shallow end of the gene pool. As for the teams play this weekend what can I say. They really have sucked the last few weeks. I still think that this team has way too much talent to keep falling the way they are. The fact that they have been on top the entire year has to be getting to their heads. I have confidence that Lindy will straighten them out soon.

Well, yesterday was a bad day for me in regards to trying to see live music in Buffalo. First off I was unable to get Hip tickets. As expected they were sold out in three minutes after going on sale. Then, to add insult to injury the Sloan show that was supposed to be at the Town Ballroom was canceled for some inexplicable reason. Apparently it will be rescheduled. We'll see.

At least the Sabres came back and pulled out a victory against Vancouver last night in a shoot out. I didn't catch the whole game, but from what I saw it was very typical of the way the Sabres have been playing lately. Poor special teams, some bad give aways (what the hell was Spacek doing in OT making that pass in front of Miller?????!!!!!), and stretches when they just seem out of it. At the same time when they turn it on they can generate a ton of pressure that lead to a ton of scoring chances, and or penalties. The problem obviously is that the power play has not worked all year. Anyway, the Sabres were able to tie the game late and force OT. They killed a 4 on 3 and got to the shoot out where they put it away. By the way I think Thomas Vanek has to get another move in the shoot out. You've at least got to get a shot on net. Ales Kotalik's move was sweet and Miller ended up making three huge saves for the shoot out win. One more game tonight against Montreal before the All-Star break. It would be nice to go into the break with three wins in a row after going through a slump.

Tomorrow at noon tickets go on sale for back to back Hip shows at the Town Ballroom March 9th and 10th. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll get my hands on a pair since there will be only a few thousand available between the two shows. Over the years the Hip have filled The Aud and HSBC Arena with no trouble at all. The Town Ballroom is easily the top smaller venue in Buffalo right now and recently they have been getting some good shows. As a matter of fact tomorrow night I'll be heading down for another veteran Canadian band, Sloan. As for the Hip shows, they should be awesome. The Hip + Small Venue = Good Times.

The Sabres looked for the most part better than they have the last three games against the Bruins tonight. There were still way too many give aways though. I thought Paille, Vanek, Roy, Kotalik all played well; Teppo and Kalinin didn;t play too well at all. Briere still looked tight as well.

Disappointing End to a Great Season and Big Naturals

Ultimately the 2005-2006 Buffalo Sabres season will go down as a disappointment. Despite the fact that no one expected this team to get a games reach of the Stanley Cup Finals at the beginning of the season - as the season went on I think just about everyone "believed" they could win it. This obviously makes the loss in Game 7 to the Carolina Hurricanes that much tougher.

Still, this will go down as my all time favorite season as a Sabres fan. I think most mostly everyone else in my age bracket would tell you the same exact thing. I'm feeling very confident that this core group of guys (most if not the whole roster should be back next year) will be competing for the cup late in the playoffs the next couple of years.

The main factor holding them back obviously this year were the injuries. I feel confident that McKee (who they MUST sign this off-season to a FAT contract), Tallinder, and Kalinin will be back and healthy next year. Connolly and Teppo are different stories though. Connolly who in my opinion is the Sabres best offensive weapon when not concussed has yet to prove he can stay in the lineup. Teppo is old, I think they will get a solid season from him next year, but him going down this playoffs is not surprising. Think of the upside of just about every player on the current roster. Miller, Roy, Pominville, Gaustad, Vanek were essentially all rookies. All with the exception of Vanek played well in the playoffs and all of them should get better. I also think Vanek once he tries 100% of the time will be MUCH BETTER. Drury, Briere, Dumont, Hecht, Grier, McKee, Tallinder, Lydman, Campbell, and Kalinin are in their primes. Only Teppo is old, but is still good for another year or two.

I guess what I'm getting at is that we've got an awesome team that can win a Stanley Cup. I can not wait until next year. Feel free to discuss in the comments section.

I missed the OC and Marissa Cooper biting it in a car crash last night because I was doing my best to catch a buzz in Washington DC with Jamma5000, and other friends of my brother Terry's who think they are better than him because they wear ties to work and he doesn't. The Eastern Conference Finals start tomorrow, there is some serious Cup Fever in Buffalo, everyone. The Sabres definitely were not expected to beat the Sens, and 4 out of the 5 so-called experts on ESPN pick the Hurricanes. I'm obviously biased but I just don't see the Sabres losing a series the rest of the way. They are too solid all the way through the line-up and they have the players that will step up when need. I am making my first official prediction of this post-season and picking the Sabres in 6. The bounces keep going the Sabres way.

The second round of the NHL Playoffs have begun. WOW. I'm not sure the Sabres were the best team last night and the bounces definitely bounced the way you need them to bounce to win a game like that, but the Sabres again showed that they are the real deal and capable of going all the way.

The last two minutes of regulation:
- A shorthanded goal by Derek Roy set up beautifully by the Sabres most talented forward Tim Connolly to tie the game at 5
- The Senators scoring the go-ahead apparent game-winner a few seconds later
- The tying goal by Tim Connolly (both he and Derek Roy had AMAZING games) with 13 seconds left to push the game in OT

And then the winner by Drury 19 seconds into OT.

Fear and Loathing

I spent the last six days in fabulous Las Vegas which is waaaaay too long to be in Las Vegas, especially if you like to drink, eat, and gamble. I also did really well in the Seneca Niagara Casino First Wednesday of The Month Tournament last Wednesday - thank you Geoff the funds have been transferred, I'm glad you are supporting a good cause. Anyway, this little win allowed me to realllllllly enjoy myself. Lots of bets made on baseball games, black jack sessions, poker sessions, and video poker sessions while sitting at a bar drinking while watching sports which I had bet on sessions. We saw Blue Man Group Friday night - which was AWESOME. I also spent a lot of time eating a lot of food.

Back to reality. There have been exactly 10,000 stories about the Bills leaving Buffalo this past week. And of course today in the Buffalo News Bucky Gleason states the "inevitable" like everyone else has for the past several weeks. I can't get myself to believe a team that has sold out every home game the last 3 years would leave, but I guess I am being naive it's all about the money, right?

On a more positive note check out Band of Horses. I listened to their new record, Everything All the Time, on the plane to and from Vegas about 9 times. Good stuff. You can download songs at their website. Also, here is a live performance they did on KEXP in Seattle at So Much Silence.

I was spending some time on the internet looking over the rosters in my Fun Boy League Fantasy Baseball league just now and I want to state right here that I love my team and I predict that the Buffalo Big Balls will be in contention of their first ever title. After a very disappointing season the BBB are prepared to do battle with a formidable offensive group that mixes both speed and power, and a deep pitching staff anchored by a top ace and top closer. A-Rod may not be the guy you want up with 2 on and 2 outs down 2 in the bottom of the ninth but you do want him in fantasy baseball because he puts up sick numbers always. I also have Hot Carl Crawford, Travis "Pronk" Hafner and NL Rookie of the Year - 2005, Ryan Howard. Rounding out the offense: Jason Varitek at catcher, Robinson Cano at 2B, Rafael Furcal at SS, Matt Holiday, Abrey Huff, and rookie Jeremy Hermedia in the OF. The pitching is solid with starters Roy Halladay, Barry Zito, John Lieber, Kevin Millwood, Chris Capuano and Jose Contreas. Joe Nathan will get me lots of saves. PLAY BALL!

The Sabres win tonight to finish out the 6 game road trip 4-2, not shabby. Miller was very good and they had a strong third period after starting off slowly in the first. I will be in attendance Thursday night as the hated Philadelphia Flyers will be in town. I am sure there will be a lot of obnoxious Flyer fans there.

Anyway, the stretch of games the Sabes have coming up will go a long way in determining if they can climb atop the Eastern Conference or will be happy to just be in the playoffs by opening on the road.

February 1st marks the one year birthday of this blog. For some reason I felt I needed to post a picture I took of The Hip, relate a story about how my dog shit on my rug (which happened roughly about 3 times this year - not bad), and then thought it was interesting that I added two curse words to the spell checker. Also that first day Geoff shared a humorous scene from Napoleon Dynamite, and told a true story about our friend Dave's insane father, Art. Anyway, its strange to think that I am actually still posting a year later. I really love myself and I think that what I have to say is IMPORTANT.

Lando's movie reccomendation this week is Match Point.
If you are forced to see a "chick-flick date movie" with your significant other and you've seen all the gay cowboy movies that are already out, there are worse ways to spend two hours in a theatre. The movie is as disturbing as it is entertaining. Plenty to argue about with your wife/girlfriend coming out of the theatre, which is always fun. Plus, you get to watch Scarlett Johansson's braless yabbos flop around in t-shirts. They're spectacular.

First things first. My great great girlfriend of almost four years said yes to my marriage proposal and is now my great great fiancee. She is the best girl ever, and we could not be happier. Thanks to the 5 of you who come to FTIT and already know this news and have wished us well.

So, I popped the question while we were in Toronto this weekend. My cover for getting her up there was to see Broken Social Scene who we both are into pretty heavily right now (me way more than her, but whatever). I will not bore you all with a long review on how awesome and great it was, because that is what I do every time I see a live show. I will mention that it is pretty surreal seeing as many as 12 musicians on the stage at once (most of them playing a guitar) and that Feist is AWESOME. She is on Jimmy Kimmel tonight and you should tivo it. I couldn't take my eyes off her when she was on the stage and my new fiancee was getting a little perturbed at the fact that I talked about her most of the next day as we drove home. I am only doing this because Lando hates when I talk about rock n' roll, but I have to say that the new We Are Scientists album that just came out Tuesday is good to very good. I've listened to it about 4 or 5 times all the way through and I've already found myself humming several of the songs to myself while doing things like making coffee, showering, and walking down the street. In addition my brother and I went down to The Buffalo Icon and saw them play live last night. Great show, they rocked the party that rocked the party. Also of note the members of the band sat directly in front of me on the plane from NYC to Buffalo yesterday afternoon. I briefly talked to the lead singer/guitarist about the unseasonably warm Buffalo weather. Also on the flight was the Iona Men's Basketball team and Larry Quinn of the Sabres.

Now for the 3 of you actually read this blog and the 0 of you who care about this kind of thing and only really care about seeing sexy photos of sexy actresses, We Are Scientists are thought of as a "buzz" indie band by certain bloggers who have opinions on such things. I guess because of all the attention they have recently gotten at different MP3 blogs, they are a buzz band, but whatever who gives an effing ef. I would recommend them, they sound good and have several fun catchy tunes.

On to our NFL franchise currently being run by two senior citizens. I really hope that Marv hires someone who has been a head coach and has had some success, ie - won a playoff game or two. Jim Haslett is the top name out there right now and I guess it makes sense. He wants the job, had some brief success in New Orleans, and is not 80. His detractors will point out that New Orleans has pretty much sucked the last two or three years, and are traditionally underachievers. But, I ask you, what is the difference between Haslett and the other candidates being mentioned? Not much in my opinion. I guess you can point to Jim Fassel and the fact that he went to a Superbowl, but he just does not do anything for me. If he was so great why didn't we hire him two years ago?

It was damn near 60 degrees in Buffalo, NY today. That made me think about my fantasy baseball team, and what "fantasy" team doesn't include the hard-working, corn-fed single-season HR King!?! Good luck getting into the HOF next year, you do NOT have my vote. Anyway...

Unfortunately, there are only 7 NFL games left - and 4 will be this weekend which is often thought of as the best NFL weekend of the year. There is much to discuss today, but we will take our 43-29-1 season record (58.9% winning percentage) and strive for the 60% mark - not bad:

ESPN radio is talking about the Bills situation right now. The host just said Mularkey has "thin skin." I could not agree more. I must admit to getting very hooked on the whole iTunes Videos feature. I have found myself both buying and downloading from various sites random music videos, SNL skits, and the like. Vanmega is one such various site that has several such videos available for download. The Broken Social Scene "Almost Crimes" is very awesome, and I know I am very queer for admitting that I have watched it 7 or 9 times. I could most certainly be doing other more producive things instead of starring at my computer screen watching a music video I suppose.

I made it to my 4th Sabres game of the year last night (tomorrow night will be my 5th). The Sabes once again followed a loss with a WIN over the Lightning of Tampa Bay. Thank God the Sabres continue to play well and be entertaining. With the less than stellar state of the Bills right now, Sabres' games are a nice way to have some positive sports mojo going. They looked awesome last night and I think they have proven that they will be hanging around Ottawa (who lost last night) right up until the end of the year. Also I think Tim Connolly should grow his hair back out.

Last Day of 2005

The Sabres have 54 pts in 39 games this season and show absolutely NO SIGNS of slowing down. I mentioned the "Cup" back in early October as a joke, but I think making it deep into the playoffs and reaching the Finals is very possible. Ottawa is still the class of the NHL, they have blown the Sabres out of the water so far this year, but I think the Sabres can skate with them and get the goaltendinig to potentially pull out a seven game series. Plus Hasek will pull his groin sometime this year.

2005 is just about over, and I have decided to share with the rest of the world some of my "Best of 2005's".

For example I obviously spent a lot of time in 2005 posting pictures of Jessica Alba, and for that reason I would say that she was my "Babe of the Year". DUH.

I will also be making a few "Top 5 lists", such as "Top 5 Parties of 2005":
5. Fourth of July Weekend, good old fashioned summer time fun.
4. Bill's Season Opener, it seems like such a long time ago that the Bills were 1-0 and destined for an exciting season.
3. Fantasy Baseball Draft Day: always one of the best party days.
2. Penn State Weekend: this took place in January before FTIT was born, so I didn't post any pictures or write about it. An amazing time none-the-less. It included lots of drinking at college bars, live B.B. King, vomiting in broad day light into a garbage can on a very crowded street (not me of course), and NFL Divisional Playoffs. Good Times.
1. Fantasy Football Draft - Vegas Style: I don't have pictures of this because I left my camera in Vegas. But what could be better than 8 guys in Vegas for a Fantasy Football draft? Nothing.

What a joke, Moulds is an ass and deserves any suspensions or fines he gets but this does not happen if the Bills brain trust had any clue of what they're doing. Terrible.

Obviously the best rock band of my life time is U2. In fact it is not even close. If anyone disagrees with this they are wrong and can blow me. Now, I wouldn't say that they are as good as The Stones, or the Beatles, or Zeppelin. You could argue all day and night about the order but these three are obviously the best bands of all time. I would also say that U2 are on the downswing of their careers, this last album was good not great. But, no one can argue that in the 29 years I've been alive there has been a band as consistently good. Anyway, tomorrow night is U2 at HSBC Arena. This Super-Fan will be in attendance.

PG has requested 52 reasons why WGR sucks. That would be easy to do, but who has the time (well, I do). Here are 5 +2 reasons why WGR sucks, in no particular order:

(1) Not broadcasting NY Yankess games on Sundays in the summer in favor of NASCAR. That's ridiculous.

(2) While we are at it, "Garage Pass" - seriously, enough with the NASCAR.

(3) Chris "Bulldog" Parker...and Jeremy White too.

(4) The weekly spoon versus fork debate. This week the non-sports rant on the afternoon show was Bulldog discussing his favorite band, song, chord, and even note in music history. I debated driving into a telephone pole if that would destroy my radio.

(5) Constantly referring to the "web poll." Then breaking down the "pulse" of the City based on the 18 people who voted.

(6) Gary Puffpaff was ever allowed in the same studio as an open mic.

(7) Too many new guys on the air who have lived here for 1-2 years. Seriously, any of us could do a much better job.

However, WGR does have the UB/Niagara game on right now - which is something positive. UB up 32-27 at the half.
